Left Addis today bright and early at 06.30 for the 7 hour drive to Nekemte. We drove for miles through beautiful mountains with stunning views of the plains below. I'm getting used to the driving style now - the routine is to drive up behind someone very fast, wait for a blind corner to overtake and then slow down while overtaking into the face of oncoming lorries. Still we are safe and sound and installed in the Desalegn Hotel. I have a room overlooking the main road and church - it's going to be noisy in the morning!
Rob has shown me all the important places - the best tea and cake cafe and the Internet cafe, the rest will probably have to wait til Monday now, as very few folks here work on a Sunday.
It looks as though I may start teaching on Monday, which will be good.
The event of the day has to be walking down the main street of Nekemte, when a white couple appeared from nowhere and asked us if we were from Exeter University! Turns out Rob had heard of them before - they are involved with supporting preschool education here. It was very interesting talking to them about how I might be able to approach the teaching here - we are very 'question and answer' at the bedside at home, where the students here are used to straightforward didactic teaching, so may not speak to me at all.
Anyway - 8.20pm - bedtime!
